Vote, Christians

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
I submitted a letter earlier challenging Christians to know what they believe, why they believe it and to live according to those beliefs. Then as Christians in America I encouraged them to vote according to their beliefs.

Here are some additional challenges to Christians encouraging them to vote. I recently learned of a group of young people in Germany during World War II called The White Rose Society. This was a group formed in large part because they were not pleased with how silent the church in Germany was in regard to what was happening in their own backyard – the Holocaust. They opposed the Hitler regime and paid for it with their lives.  One of the mottos of this group was: “We are Christian, we are German, therefore we are responsible for Germany.”

Christians, I encourage you to think about this motto … what would you put in this statement for yourself? As Christians in America, one of our primary responsibilities is to vote and to vote according to our biblical worldview.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you are imposing your views on them by supporting such virtues as life, marriage and liberty. As Christians we are commanded to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. It is not by any means imposing your views on someone to tell them what you believe and why you believe it and in a winsome and loving way to try to persuade them to believe what you believe. We are to speak the truth in love, but this does not mean we don’t speak at all. Speak to those who oppose you and share with them your beliefs in love.

As a final thought for you to contemplate: One of the leaflets that The White Rose Society secretly printed in Germany to oppose the Hitler regime read: “Do not forget that every people deserves the regime they are willing to endure.”

Thankfully in America we don’t live under a Hitler-like regime, however, how many times do we as Christians complain about our government and the many immoral laws that are passed or the mandates that are forced on us, but we fail to act at the ballot box?

Here is the link again to register to vote online: https://registertovote.org/forms/register/registration/indiana.html and you can also go to the BMV and register.
