Vikings' Championship Win Leads High School Roundup

    ROCHESTER — The Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team won its first Winning Edge Holiday Classic championship since the 2004-05 season Friday night at Rochester High School.
    Taking on the hosting Rochester Zebras in the championship game, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings used a strong fourth-quarter effort to turn a 31-28 lead into a 46-34 victory, improving to 6-2 on the season.
    In the win, Nick Kindig and Tanner Andrews each scored 16 points, while Jeffrey Tillman and Jacob Ritchey each had five.
    The Vikings’ six wins is just one behind the entire win total of last season’s 7-14 squad.
    Valley will look to reach that seventh win Friday at Northfield.

Friday in Peru
The Whitko boys basketball shook off a three-game losing streak to win the Beef O’Brady’s/American Trust Miami County Tournament this week in Peru. After defeating Peru 66-50 Thursday, the Wildcats won the tournament with a 64-55 win over the LaVille Lancers Friday in the title game. In the championship victory, senior Logan Irwin led the Wildcats with 34 points, while junior Alex Stoddard scored 12. The 3-5 Wildcats travel to Rochester Friday for a Three Rivers Conference game.

The Wawasee boys basketball team finished fifth at the 10-team Carroll Shootout, defeating Prairie Heights 64-38 Friday afternoon, then going on to beat East Noble 53-48 later in the fifth-place game. The tournament began Thursday at Columbia City, with Wawasee defeating Fort Wayne Blackhawk (73-56), but losing to Carroll (51-37). Against Prairie Heights, Wawasee was led by Jacob Thompson’s 24 points, then he went on to score 28 in the win over East Noble. The 8-3 Wawasee Warriors host NorthWood Friday in Northern Lakes Conference action.

Playing in the consolation game of the Wabash County Tournament Friday at Northfield High School, the Manchester boys basketball team got its first win of the season. Facing the Southwood Knights, a team it had lost to 61-58 on Dec. 16, the Manchester Squires got 18 points from Logan Brunn, 12 from Derek Self and another 11 from Grant Schuler to get the win, improving to 1-6 on the year. The Squires host Lakeland Christian Academy Tuesday.
