Verlin Allen 'Al' Young

NORTH WEBSTER – Verlin Allen “Al” Young, 83, North Webster, passed away at 6 a.m. Oct. 5, 2014, at his residence.
He was born June 14, 1931, in Huntington to Arthur C. and Priscilla May Burnworth Young. On Oct. 23, 1949, in Huntington he married Peggy Joyce Welker, who survives in North Webster.
He graduated in 1949 from Huntington High School. He retired from Kmart Corp., Fort Wayne, after 42 years of service and served in the National Guard. He formerly served as department director for the civil defense in Huntington, served on the city council in Huntington, Huntington City Sheriff’s Reserve, Huntington County Sherriff’s Reserve, and he was one of the first registered EMTs in Huntington County and drove for the North Webster EMS for a short time in the early 1990s. He moved to North Webster in 1990 from Huntington, where he had lived all of his life except for one year when he lived in Elkhart.
He was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church and Sons of the American Legion Post #253 and a former member of the Lakeland Kiwanis, both in North Webster.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen (and spouse Bruce) Street, Huntington, and Kristine Young, Indianapolis; a son, Kent (and spouse Janelle) Young, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Meredith Wamsley, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Charlotte Schultz and Evelyn Walker.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Road, North Webster, with Associate Pastor Robert Dailey of the church officiating. Burial is in Mock Addition to the North Webster Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Ind. 13 and C.R. 500N, North Webster.
