They put their uniform on every morning. They carefully pin their badge in the right place. They do this every morning when they get ready for work. They kiss their kids good bye and head off to whatever.
This may seem familiar to many working parents, but these people get to work and maybe will be told they are on riot duty. They spend their day trying to control a mob throwing everything from rocks to molotov cocktails, to somebody shooting a gun. So we will tell them and their partners that they don’t treat us right, they abuse their authority and they are racist.
They may go home and kiss their spouse and kids while they wonder what profession they got themselves into. Despite all their efforts to try to protect life and property, it seems society is against them. They are racist, murderers, a corrupt person protected by a badge. Who even thinks this way? Who can challenge the sacrifice that these brave souls give us everyday?
I was a fireman in Chicago for 15 years and I can tell you, I respected the cops. It was one job I didn’t want. It seems today, nobody wants it. They are challenged with situations that are a traumatic experience for any of us, yet they are expected to act with total discipline when their life is on the life in a split second.
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad the cops are around. I feel comfort knowing that I can call 911 and I can get help. I hope they put their uniform on every morning with the same dedication they wore it the day they were sworn in. I hope they know that there are a vast majority of civilians that love that they are here. I hope that there are others who feel the way that I do.
Maybe we need more training for the cops, but there can be no doubt, ... we need more training for civilians!
