Tigers' Win At NorthWood Leads Local Roundup

NAPPANEE – With their 5-0 win over NorthWood Thursday, the Warsaw boys tennis team has a showdown between undefeated Northern Lakes Conference teams coming up.
The victory leaves Warsaw at 6-0 in the NLC, and with Concord’s 3-2 win over Northridge, it too is 6-0.
Warsaw travels to Concord Monday with the winner of that match going undefeated in the conference and having the inside track on an NLC title going into  the championships beginning Thursday at Concord.
Against NorthWood, Warsaw’s Kyle Wettschurack was a 6-1, 6-2 victor and No. 1 doubles team of AJ Herendeen and Sam Rice won 6-2, 6-4.

Thursday in North Manchester
The Manchester boys tennis team got a 4-1 home win over Whitko Thursday evening. Manchester’s Max Karg and Brayton Spann won at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles team of Riley Woods and Dalton Day, as well as the No. 2 duo of Morgan Metzger and Noah Cain were also victories. In the team loss, Whitko’s Tyler Baugher did win at No. 1 singles. Whitko will be at Saturday’s Knox Invitational and Manchester’s next match is Monday at home against Columbia City.

Hosting Columbia City and Whitko at Sycamore Golf Club Thursday, the Manchester Lady Squires picked up a pair of wins. Shooting a 182, Manchester was 18 strokes better than Columbia City, who shot a 200, while Whitko finished with a 217. Manchester’s Lindsey Budnik was the medalist with a 40, followed by teammate Claire Barnett’s 42. Manchester will be at LaFontaine Golf Club for Saturday’s Huntington North Sectional, while Whitko will be at Warsaw’s Stonehenge Golf Club.

In their final match before Saturday’s Warsaw Sectional at Stonehenge Golf Club, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings finished third in a three-team meet. At Culver’s Mystic Hills Golf Club, Rochester shot a 182, followed by Culver Girls Academy’s 189 and Valley’s 259. Rochester’s Kaitlin Faust with the medalist with a 42, while Valley’s low score was a 46, shot by Allyson Ross. Valley tees off at 10:50 a.m. Saturday at Stonehenge.

In a non-conference game, the Warsaw girls soccer team coasted to a 7-0 home win over Columbia City Thursday. Senior Gabby Monroy produced a hat track in the win, scoring three goals, while classmate Meredith Hollar scored twice. The two goals leave Hollar just nine shy of tying 2004-graduate Ashley Kitchens’ school record of 61. Also scoring for Warsaw were sophomore Claire Snodgrass and freshman Elizabeth Van Wormer. Next up for the 7-2-2 Lady Tigers is a home game against Fort Wayne Snider Monday.

The Wawasee girls soccer team had a tough time containing Kacey Wells in a 5-0 home loss to DeKalb Thursday night. Following a goal by Katie Hamlin, Kacey Wells went on to score the next four for the Lady Barons, dropping Wawasee to 3-6-1 on the year. Next up for the Lady Warriors is a Northern Lakes Conference home game against Class 2A No. 16 Northridge Tuesday.

Surviving the scare from the Lady Pilgrims, Warsaw was led by Jamie Lacheta’s 20 kills and four aces, while Katie Voelz finished the match with 15 kills, 26 digs and two blocks.
