Tigers Roll Past DragonsAfter what coach Frank Courtois called a sluggish start, Warsaw Community High School's varsity boys soccer team had little trouble finishing off the Argos Dragons Tuesday night.
Hosting the Class 1A second-ranked Dragons in their home opener, the Tigers' Cole Voss scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 18th minute as Warsaw cruised to a 6-0 win.
“We started a little sluggish,” said Courtois, whose team led 2-0 at halftime. “The kids realized that we were the better side and started putting things together. We worked on our finishing (Monday) for an hour and a half. It paid off. I think the kids did a good job, not perfect, but they did a real good job today.”
With the win, Warsaw improved to 1-0-1 while Argos fell to 0-1.
Senior Eric Ocock pushed the Tigers' advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 25th minute, followed by second-half goals from sophomore Blake Burns (51st minute) and seniors Joaquin Juarez (69th minute), Elian Mejia (76th minute) and Voss (77 minute).
Warsaw opened its season Saturday with a scoreless tie at Carroll. Courtois said the difference in Tuesday’s game was his squad's ability to finish opportunities.
“We couldn't finish Saturday ... we had some opportunities and couldn't put them away,” said Courtois. “Carroll had some opportunities, but I think we had more and we just couldn't finish. That was our first game of the year. We worked on finishing in practice Monday. We did a lot of shooting, a lot of dribbling and shooting. Tonight the kids put the ball away.”
The Tigers are in action again Saturday when they host Maconaquah.
