Tiger Golfers Top Wawasee, Goshen

WINONA LAKE – Warsaw had three boys golfers shoot in the 30s, and the other two varsity players in the low 40s to roll to Northern Lakes Conference wins over Wawasee and Goshen Tuesday.

The Tigers finished at 155, the Warriors at 179 and Goshen had a 196 at Stonehenge Golf Club.

Tim Rata paced the Tigers with an even-par 36 on the front nine, followed by Sam Yeager at 38 and Luke Johnson’s 39. Luke Delp and Tommy Meier had a 42 and 43, respectively.

“It was a good team effort and good, solid golf from all of them,” Warsaw coach Rich Haddad said.

As the weather breaks, Haddad said his team is heating up with the atmosphere, peaking at the right time of the season.

“Early on, there was a lot of inconsistency,” he said. “In the last two weeks, they’re really starting to lower their scores and develop that consistency.

“I think they still have room to improve; they have a couple of bad holes here and there they can tighten up, but I like the momentum they have right now. The next two weeks are all about the NLC, with the round robin followed by the conference tournament. Our first goal is to be NLC champions, and this is the time to peak, for sure.”

Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone said his young team, with two freshmen and a sophomore on the varsity team, played one of its better matches of the season and getting a win over the RedHawks.

Freshman Zach Leedy and sophomore Dillon Drake paced the Warriors with 42s,  and Senior Cameron Brill had a 43. Evan Dippon and Kobe Jones finished at 52 and 55, respectively.

“That was a good win for our team,” he said of the win over Goshen. “They played about as solid a round as they’ve played this year, and on a difficult course.

“The team is getting better, but we have a long way to go. We have a bunch of kids that will work hard at it the rest of this year and over the summer, so we’ll be OK”

Both teams continue NLC play on Thursday. Warsaw will play Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth at Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth, and Wawasee hosts Northridge at South Shore.
