Thursday we celebrate St. Patrick's Day. How much do we really know about St. Patrick?
Saint Patrick was not born in Ireland, but Great Britain. When he was a teenager he was carried off to Ireland and sold into slavery. He was the son of a deacon in the church, but he did not have a relationship with God at that time. He had a Saul-like vision, which became a salvation-like experience. He eventually was given the opportunity to return to Great Britain, but felt called to return to Ireland to preach the Gospel to the idolatrous Irish people. At great personal risk he preached to the Irish people.
All this can be found if you type in on Google search "The Autobiography of St. Patrick." There you can find St. Patrick's words of his conversion and his call to the Irish people to bring the Gospel to them. There is absolutely no evidence that St. Patrick ever chased all the snakes from Ireland or that he used the Shamrock to teach the people about the Trinity.
So as you celebrate St Patrick's Day, remember a little about the real St. Patrick, or better yet search Google for "The Autobiography of St. Patrick."
