Souder

Editor, Times-Union:

The primary hadn't been over for a whole 24 hours and our Congressman Mark Souder couldn't wait to go on WOWO and start lying about his Democratic challenger Tom Hayhurst.

He couldn't wait even a whole minute into the interview before he started relaying half the facts to the listeners. He told everyone that he personally got about 38,000 votes without telling them that it in fact only amounted to 48 percent of the vote. He didn't want anyone to know that more republicans voted for someone else than for him.

Next he went on to say that Dr. Hayhurst, the Democratic candidate, only got about 9,000 votes, neglecting to say that it equaled about 80 percent of the democratic vote. In a primary when you can only vote one party or the other, vote tallies cannot really be compared between parties to determine support or predict an outcome in November.

Then Mr. Souder goes on to state that his primary victory suggests that democrats actually crossed over to vote for him, which is like saying the sun rising in the east suggests potato.

He also begins blithely lumping Dr. Hayhurst's name in with support for Obama administration policies without due concern for Dr. Hayhurst's stated and easily referenced political positions. Souder plainly states that Dr. Hayhurst favored the Health Care Bill that passed, which if he were to research rather than make up facts, he would find that in the Feb. 2 issue of the Warsaw Times-Union Hayhurst said the health care system needs to be fixed but didn't see a need for sweeping reform. In fact, if he had simply gone to Dr. Hayhurst's Web site he would have seen this under the heading "Health Care Issues" "A comprehensive and affordable basic level of health care can be provided to all Americans. It can be achieved with a health care system that is efficient, proactive, and makes economic and common sense. I support fiscally responsible proposals that extend a basic level of health care to all Americans - while retaining the right of an individual or employer to choose the type of health care that is satisfactory for him or her."

Lastly, before the interview ends he whines about how he's tired of people's false personal attacks against him, he says he's tired of people lying about him while taking five minutes on WOWO to do just that very thing. I wish he would give us some credit for being intelligent, but it's clear that Mr. Souder is playing the same old Washington game, praying on our fears and assuming we are all completely ignorant. What he forgets is that we elect congressmen not only to represent our needs in Washington but also to be a representative of us to Washington.

Well, if you ask me the people of Indiana's 3rd Congressional District do not let powerful people tell them how to vote, they work hard to leave this place better than when they found it and most of all they have the integrity to always do and say what is right and for these and many other reasons Representative Mark Souder no longer represents us.
