Solution To Assault Rifles

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:

Thank you for your article in the weekender paper dated Feb. 24 and 25. Since you are not sure gun laws are the answer to mass shootings like Parkland and Las Vegas, the following is a simple and logical solution.

The time has come to ban all guns having magazines, clips or bullets which fire more than 10 shots. This would include all handguns or assault rifles colored black or otherwise. Do not take away assault rifles, but make it a crime to own clips or magazines that now fire 30, 40 or 100 rounds. These automatic rifles are only needed by military and in some cases by our police.

These 10 million or more people registered to these weapons would then be safe from PTSD or going mentally ill in the meantime. If this seems crazy, California does not allow you magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

If gun manufacturers feel any responsibility for mass murders, let them come up with magazines that include a time delay. If you had to wait 30 seconds to stuff any magazines in the mag well, this might discourage the three or four magazines you carried in your article. Finally, if manufacturers of guns would make safer weapons, they just might reach a market in other countries.

Criminals would then not be in any position to outgun the police, or if President Trump gets his way, our teachers.

In 1792 when the Second Amendment was passed, our forefathers could not have envisioned mass murders like this. Please ask our Congress to address this problem now. I would hope our senators and Congress members will take action soon.

P.S. Do an article on safer guns. A policeman told me that guns could be imprinted with fingerprints.
