In response to Mr. Beeching's letter: The only facts you present are the same, old, tired laundry list your group presented when they tried to ram this through last fall. You present no studies of contaminated wells, no studies showing the lakes are being harmed by septic tanks and no studies by anyone who does not have a special interest involved (making profits) in the higher density use of the land around the lakes.
The county could cure the small lot size problem with the stroke of a pen. No building permits for undersized lots. People would have to buy a property adjacent to them if they wanted to make any improvements.
Fine anyone polluting the lake. Isn't that a novel idea? Make the party doing the damage responsible. Towns are faced with that mandate everyday.
Instead, people like you and Commissioner Truex are like the Democrats in Washington. They ignore reality and spend other people's money regardless of the state of the economy. You want to subsidize rich lakefront property owners with money from people who have much less.
If the commissioners and county council think this is such a good idea then they should pick up the cost of all the infrastructure involved and pay for it like other capital assets are paid for in the county - taxes based on assessed valuation. But they can not find money to take care of our roads, let alone pay for infrastructure costing $20 million on the low end.
I used to sympathize with their predicament. The economy is in shambles. But Mr. Truex proves they have no sympathy with us. It is time for him and any other commissioner who supports him to go. He obviously is siding with developers who want to crowd our lakes even more than they are.
