This past spring, my colleagues and I passed a major property tax reform bill that included a property tax exemption for senior citizens. The exemption allows homeowners 65 and older to have a limit put on how much their property tax bill can increase from one year to the next. The idea is to prevent those on limited incomes from being burdened by fluctuating property taxes that could make them vulnerable to losing their homes.
This opportunity is available to Hoosier homeowners 65 or older who have a gross adjusted income of less than $40,000 for a joint filing or $30,000 for a single filing. The gross adjusted value on the homestead cannot exceed $160,000.
I encourage people who think they qualify to apply for the exemption quickly because the deadline to file is on Dec. 31
