Second Session Of Winter Classes Announced At Local YMCA

Kosciusko Community YMCA will be starting its second session of winter classes on Feb. 20. Classes will run through April 2. Classes for youth will include swim lessons, youth fitness and gymnastics classes for all ages. Registration for winter classes will start for Y members Monday and for everyone else on Feb. 13. Classes that promote the healthy living aspect of the Y will include group exercise and indoor group cycling, classes for older adults and water aerobics in both the warm water and lap pools. Adult classes are included with a Y membership. For a complete listing of times and descriptions, see www.kcymca.org. English as a second language is being offered at the Y in partnership with Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church for those 18 and up on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. until May 16. There are five different levels based on ability. You can join the class at any time. The class is free with an initial fee for the book. Sign up at the YMCA’s Welcome Center. To support those in the community going through cancer and their caregivers, the Y is hosting “Kathy’s Cancer Conversations,” a volunteer-led cancer support group meeting on the second Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living inside the YMCA. On Feb. 13, the group will look at therapeutic oils. On March 13, the group will have Dr. Goksel for “Ask the Oncologist.” For more information, contact Stacy Thomas at 574-269-9622, Ext. 216. A co-ed adult volleyball league will start Feb. 20 on Monday nights with games starting between 7 and 9 p.m. Teams can be six to nine players with a maximum of four male players at a time. There also will be a volleyball clinic offered for youth in second through sixth grade on Mondays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., from Feb. 20 to March 27. A seven-week course for people who would like to investigate Christianity or brush up on the basics will start Feb. 22. “Christianity Explored” will be on Wednesdays, from Feb. 22 to March 29, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Register by Feb. 17. Contact Matt Goebel at 574-269-9622, ext. 235. The YMCA is partnering with Crosswinds Counseling to offer a seminar titled “Maximizing Your Marriage” over the course of six months. These seminars will be interactive and educational and will include various assessments and exercises addressing the topic covered each month. The Y wants to encourage the community to get screened for pre-diabetes by getting an A1c screen. Parkview Health will offer A1c tests for free from 6 to 9 a.m. March 14. Walk-ins welcome. The Adult Beginner Spanish course starting March 20 will be a basic course offering introductory Spanish for adults. Participants will learn to listen, speak, read and write while enjoying the rewards of life-long learning and gaining the skills to connect to the Spanish speaking members of the community.
