Scout David Cline Sponsors Canoe

Posted

SYRACUSE – Wawasee High School student and Boy Scout David Cline has sponsored a red canoe this year as part of his Scout rank advancement.
Cline is a member of Syracuse Boy Scout Troop 728. In the spring he filled the canoe with seasonal flowers and has since updated it with fall mums. The red canoes, placed throughout the town, are a beautification project of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce. Individuals and organizations volunteer to sponsor a specific canoe by maintaining it with flowers and seasonal decorations, according to a provided news release.
The canoe that Cline is sponsoring is on North Huntington Street next to the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce office. The canoe was donated in 2021 by local men Jack Zimmerman, the late Bob Baugher and the late Roger Niles who was an Eagle Scout in his youth. The trio raced the Sea Nymph canoe in 1974-75 throughout Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. After storing it for many years, the men donated it to the chamber’s beautification project. It now sits on the site of the former Sea Nymph factory where it was built.
Syracuse Boy Scout Troop 728 meets 6:30 p.m. every Monday throughout the school year at the Scout Lodge and Woods located at 10433 E. CR 500. For more information on joining the troop or volunteering, contact Scoutmaster Trevor Ritter at 574-377-6177.
