School Day Begins Too Early

Editor, Times-Union:

I pray the Indiana General Assembly will take another look at clock management for our children and our schools.

You may wonder, what is clock management and why is it important? Clock management is simply “time.” Why is time so important to our children?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the starting times of schoolchildren should not start before 9:30 in the morning. Studies have found that children’s biorhythms do not function very well in morning darkness.

In 2012, over 50,000 Hoosier students had recurring absences, mostly due to truancy. Skipping school causes students to fall behind and drop out. Without a diploma, no job, no money and time on their hands, drugs and crime are only a matter of time. Statistics have shown that Indiana’s children are in second place for suicide attempts.

Every problem has more than one solution. Hopefully our General Assembly will review clock management for our future — our children.
