Scam Warning

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
Monday, Nov. 19, we received a call telling us that our grandson was in a foreign country and had been in a car accident.   Was asked to send $1,500 ASAP so that he could be released from the jail. The first person pretended to be our grandson than another person came on the line. He said his name was Kevin Williamson, attorney for American conflict. He was very convincing with what he was saying was the truth.
He asked that we go to Western Union and send the money to a man named Carlos Maloney. He then would get it to our grandson, which then would be released from the holding area in the jail within the hour after receiving the money. He sent us on a guilt trip so we decided that we should help out our “grandson.” Never thought we would fall for a scam such as this. We were told that if there was any questions of why we were sending the money, we were to say that it was for a business. If asked more questions, we were to say that it was to purchase auto parts.  They told us not to say it was a personal matter.
On the way to the bank to withdraw, I stopped at our church and talked with our pastor. He could see through the scam right away. I know it was the Holy Spirit that guided me to talk with our pastor. We were so close to loosing a lot of money.
I made a call to our bank manager and she said that it was a scam and not to give any information.
For those who want, go to Google and put in “What is the Grandparent scam?” It will be just as we experienced on Monday.
Please if anyone else gets a call such as this, hang up!
