Responding to Gerald Roach's Feb 11 letter, I take exception to a lot of what he says, but two things in particular strike me.
First, Mr. Roach is inclined to blame everything he sees wrong with America on "they.” Like his idol Trump, he accepts no responsibility for anything he thinks is wrong, and he offers no viable solutions. All he does is complain.
Second, Mr. Roach says he's tired of social justice. I'm guessing he never had to worry about whether his child would be unfairly targeted by police because of the color of his skin, or whether he'd be denied housing because of his sexual orientation.
While it's admirable that Mr. Roach has worked with and shared secrets with his "black brothers,” that doesn't magically erase decades of systemic racism. If Mr. Roach really wanted to be supportive of his black friends, he might start off by recognizing this.
Reading Mr. Roach's letter, I wonder if he and I could ever agree on anything. It's clear he has passion and love for America. Maybe we could start there.
