Republican Speeches

Editor, Times-Union:

I am going to make a quick analysis of the 2010 mid-term elections from the acceptance speeches of the Republican Party.

Republican Gubernatorial winner Jan Brewer was asked why she thought the Republicans did so well. Consequently, her answer was that she had not seen the populace more informed than any other time in history. Yes, I agree with her, ultimately millions if not billions of dollars worth of information. Oh, the power of propaganda, especially when it taps into audiences pre-existing beliefs and fears.

It is said that the corporate spending against the Democrats was unprecedented, even millions of dollars worth from our own Chamber of Commerce. Talk about Democracy being bought. Also, as I further listened to the Republican Party acceptance speeches I could only come up with three or four talking points.

First, they want President Obama out of the White House. Next, they want a system that will protect capitalism. Plus, they want to get the government out of the way. Further, and probably most important, they want to cut taxes for the rich. And last but not least, they want to repeal health care reform.

I do not see any of these concepts as building a strong and healthy democratic society; actually, I believe they will do just the opposite.

Further, as Newt Gingrich rallied the GOP faithful he warned the entire world how strong and dangerous the Republican Party was and that no one should even think about messing with them. While at the same time Republican speaker of the House John Boehner was literally crying because he had to work in his fathers bar while going to college.

Corporate America is probably echoing Mark Twain as he wrote in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "Hain't we got all the fools in town on our side? And ain't that a big enough majority in any town?" Oh, the power of millions and if not billions of dollars worth of information.
