Recycling Depot Ready For Annual Programs

Posted
With April’s arrival, two annual programs are gearing up at the county’s recycling agency.
Here are recaps of the programs run by KC Recycling Depot in Warsaw:
TV AMNESTY
The agency has launched a three-month amnesty program for people who bring in TVs and monitors.
What had been a one-month amnesty now extends from April through June, said Shelly Heckert, director of KC Recycling Depot.
While many electronics are accepted for free, most TVs come with a charge, especially the old cathode ray tube TVs, which are more difficult to recycle.
The Depot normally charges between $10 and $30 for TVs, depending on size. Flat-screen TVs include a $5 or 10 fee, Heckert said.
Heckert said the amnesty program often proves to be popular.
TVs and monitors can be dropped off during office hours at the Depot at 220 S. Union St., Warsaw.
Three TVs per household per visit is the policy, she said.
Groups with large numbers of TVs that they’ve collected are encouraged to call ahead and set a date.
The three-month effort aims to collect as many TVs as possible.
“The Depot is taking them for free,” Heckert said. “This is the time to pick it up and do that good deed.”
LITTER BUSTERS
KC Recycling Depot is also ready for another year of Litter Busters, a volunteer program that provides vests, collection bags and signs for volunteers interested in cleaning up fields and roadsides.
Also included in the kits are water bottles  and gloves, along with tokens for Culver’s custard.
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other student groups have prepared wildflower seed bombs that volunteers can take and distribute as they clean fields, Heckert said.
The recycling kits can be picked up at the KC Recycling office during office hours. The only item that needs to be returned are the vests, and there is no deposit.
Litter collected in KC Recycling bags can be dropped off at the Depot, Heckert said.
Service clubs, corporate groups, lake associations and neighborhood groups are encouraged to participate.
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of the month.
KC Recycling Depot operates the Solid Waste Management District for Kosciusko County and has its own board.
