Problems With Illegals

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

Recently, in several newspapers, there have been articles written on the same subject, which is illegals.

On Jan. 22, the USA Today newspaper had a cover story about "rising health care cost put focus on migrants." The story was mainly written about a town in North Carolina (Benson). If you don't want to get your blood pressure up, don't read this article. It talks about the problems illegals have getting health care when tZhey are sick.

I loved this one sentence, and I quote, "As the debate over the residency status of the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants boils, another battle is simmering over what - if any - benefits they deserve while they're here."

I am sorry, but they are illegals. They deserve nothing. If they want some health care benefits, become an American. Then this last weekend, Feb. 23-24, there was an article from Minneapolis, Minn., again about an illegal that ran a stop sign and hit a school bus, killing four students. The name of the lady who hit the bus was not her real name. One of the violations she was cited for was driving without a valid license. But four young lives are gone because of an illegal.

Then in tonight's paper, Feb. 25, on the front page it talked about our Indiana House is debating over legislation aimed at curbing illegal immigration. Republicans wanted to penalize employers for hiring illegals. Wonderful idea. But thanks to the Democrats, it may not go through.

Our politicians need to get together on this subject and get some laws passed. The way our economy is in such crisis, this is part of the problem.

After reading the USA Today article, I realized that every year when my employer has a meeting to discuss our health care benefits, and more is being taken out of my pocket, it is not the company's fault. It is our health care provider. Someone has to cover the cost for the illegals when they need medical attention. The health care companies are not going to take it out of their profits.

If you think I am totally anti-illegals, I am not. I just feel that when they come to this country, don't be an illegal for a really long time. Become an American citizen like my forefathers did. Learn our language. Several years ago, a niece of mine married a Spanish/Mexican man. He was an illegal, received a college degree, thanks to America. Unfortunately, the INS caught up with him and he was deported. So I do have a personal experience on this subject.

As I thought about writing this letter, I looked up illegal in the dictionary. It said, "Contrary to the law; not legal." I wonder if we were illegals in Mexico, what rights would we have?
