Prep Roundup: Warsaw Baseball Team Beats Columbia City

COLUMBIA CITY – Playing its third game in as many days, Warsaw’s varsity baseball team jumped out to a big lead and then held off the Columbia City Eagles Friday evening.
Scoring five runs in the first inning and three more in the second, the Tigers led 8-0 before holding off the hosts for a 14-12 win.
Warsaw is now 2-1, while Columbia City fell to 0-4.
The Eagles trimmed the Tigers’ advantage to 8-7 with a big third inning, and then both teams scored twice in the fourth frame.
Warsaw plated three more runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to take a 14-9 lead. The Eagles tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but their rally fell short.
Senior Jared Hawley and junior Matt Shoemaker had three hits each in the win.
Junior Avery Remocaldo came on in relief and was credited with the win on the mound, while classmate Mason Reber earned the save.
The Tigers are in action again today at South Bend Riley, and then open Northern Lakes Conference play Monday with a home game against Wawasee.

Vikings Score Early, Win Big
AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley’s varsity baseball team scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning Friday and cruised to a 13-2 win in five innings over the Triton Trojans.
The Vikings, who pounded out 10 hits and allowed just one Triton hit, scored twice in the second inning to take a commanding 13-0 lead.
Triton, whose only hit came off the bat of Delano Shumpert, scored one run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth.
Senior Drew Hartman, junior Wes Melanson and sophomore Tucker Shull had two hits each in the win, with Shull hitting a double and Hartman a triple.
Junior Lucas Walters also hit a double for the Vikings.
Sophomore Jaxon Torpy was credited with the win on the mound, tossing four innings without giving up a hit. Torpy gave up one run and four walks while striking out seven.
Melanson pitched the final inning, giving up one hit and one run while walking none and striking out two.
Valley (1-1) hosts Bremen today, while Triton (1-2) travels to Culver Academies Monday.

Squires’ Rally Falls Short
NORTH MANCHESTER – The host Manchester Squires’ rally fell short Friday night in a 3-2 high school baseball loss to the visiting Eastern Comets.
Eastern scored its three runs in the second inning, while Manchester scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.
Mason Roberts had two hits for the Squires, while Kaleb Fluke and Sam Martindale had one hit each.
Grant Strobel was charged with the loss on the mound after giving up five hits and one walk and striking out four in a complete-game effort.
Manchester is now 1-1 on the season and plays at Wawasee today.

Warriors Lose Big Lead At East Noble
KENDALLVILLE – Wawasee’s varsity baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning Friday night but was held to three the rest of the game in a 12-10 loss at East Noble.
The host Knights responded to Wawasee’s early offense with three runs in the bottom of the first, two in the second and seven in the third.
The Warriors plated three runs in the sixth, but their rally fell short.
Kameron Salazar, Jeremiah Bess and Jake Crousore had two hits each in the loss.
Rhett Norris led East Noble with a pair of hits in three at-bats, as the Knights scored their first win of the season.
The Warriors, who host Manchester today, fell to 2-3.
SOUTH BEND – The Warsaw Lady Tigers scored early and often Friday night en route to an 11-5 high school softball win at South Bend Washington.
Warsaw scored three runs in the first inning, two more in the third, three in the fifth and three in the seventh, ending a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the season.
Lindsey Bradley went 3 for 5 at the plate for the Lady Tigers, while Izzy Dittmar, Katie Anderson and Saylor Bradley also had multiple hits.
Courtney Chookie was credited with the win in the circle after pitching six innings. She gave up four hits and one run while striking out three. Kennedy Tennant threw one inning of relief.
Washington, now 2-6, scored one run in the sixth inning and four in the seventh.
Warsaw is in action again Monday, opening Northern Lakes Conference play at Wawasee.
