Poor Essays

Editor, Times-Union:
As an ex-English teacher, this writer is appalled at the undisciplined essays in this paper that appear to be for the sole purpose of imposing one’s views on its readers. Rather than a clear-cut essay with introduction, body and conclusion, they are vitriolic, ramblings, endlessly redundant harangues. Were these turned in for an assignment they would be covered with red ink.  The bulk of the letters appear as concrete, i.e. all mixed up and permanently set. They appear as “hitlerisms” i.e. propound something long enough, fast enough and stridently enough the “somethings” begin to evolve into “truths.” Run that by Logic 101 class! The total effect is reminiscent of the blood-curdling, bone-chilling conclusion in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.”
For those wanting to do something worthwhile with their time and energy there are many local needs. The Beaman Home warehouse uses volunteers; the hospital uses people to deliver mail and flowers to patients; most blind and visually impaired people like to be read to; Fellowship Mission welcomes meals brought in by people of the community. For those into the outdoors, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center needs trail guides for the school children’s trips there and this is as beneficial to the guides as to the guided. While these endeavors in this so very Christian community won’t get his/her name in the newspaper, the people served and the Creator know.
This writer adamantly objects to those telling others what to think and how to vote, as though they have a prior knowledge flung down to them from on High. To misquote Tiny Tim, “God help us everyone.”
