Poll Inspector Responds

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

As the poll inspector for whom GOP chairman Mike Ragan had to issue an apology, I think a word from me is in order. I have worked the polls for several years and have always enjoyed all the folks whom I have worked with. Last Tuesday was no different. So, I was surprised to find myself in the newspaper as the subject of so great a scandal.

Leola Nelson-Raphael and I met on the morning of the election. In all our interaction, I found her to be an interesting, intelligent, strong and very capable representative of her party, her gender and, yes, her race. It is disappointing to find her perception of me was so much less. Although my recollection of the 12+ hours we worked together is quite different than what has been reported, I am embarrassed my comments caused her such pain. No attempt on my part to explain the timing, context or tone of our conversations can negate her honest feelings.

I sincerely regret and apologize for the hurt caused Ms. Nelson-Raphael and the embarrassment to the GOP and the County Election Board.
