AKRON – Junior Sophie Bussard, Tippecanoe Valley’s leading scorer, sat out Tuesday night’s home game against Logansport with an ankle injury.
The Class 3A third-ranked Lady Vikings still landed on their feet, as junior Emily Peterson scored 14 points and senior Olivia Trippiedi chipped in with 11 in a 47-41 win over the Berries.
“She hurt it on Saturday, it’s a pretty bad sprain,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said of Bussard, who averaged 22 points in the Lady Vikings’ first two games.
“She’s day to day right now, maybe week to week. We don’t know when she’ll be able to play again, it’s up to the training staff. We’re not gonna put her out there until she’s healed. It could be Friday’s game against Warsaw, it could be next week.”
Sophomore Jillian Walls scored eight points in the win, while senior Asia O’Connor finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
Because of Bussard’s injury, Kindig was forced to play a different lineup, and he was impressed with the way his team responded.
“We started two posts, Asia O’Connor and Makenzie Woodcox, which is a different lineup for us,” said Kindig, whose team improved to 3-0 while Logansport fell to 1-2.
“Normally we start four guards and a post. Asia played hard and stayed out of foul trouble. She got eight rebounds and was solid around the basket. I was really proud of the way she played.
“Emily was more aggressive, looking to shoot. Jillian Walls came in and gave us eight huge points. Her and Emma Craig played a lot with Sophie out.”
Valley led 15-4 after one quarter of play, but Logansport used a big second stanza to lead 23-20 at halftime.
The Lady Vikings rallied in the third quarter and took a 30-28 lead into the final frame.
“We came out in the first quarter and played well,” said Kindig. “Give Logansport credit, they played their tails off. We were just able to make more plays down the stretch.”
Taylor Pasquale led Logansport with 13 points and four rebounds, while Megan Benn chipped in with eight points, seven steals and six rebounds.
Elle Deardorff tallied eight points, four boards, three assists and three steals in the loss.
The Lady Vikings are in action again Friday when they host county rival Warsaw.
