No. 2 Tigers Win At Carroll Tourney Leads Roundup

FORT WAYNE — The Class 2A No. 2 Warsaw boys soccer team claimed the weekend’s Carroll Tournament in Fort Wayne.
After defeating Class 1A No. 14 Fort Wayne Blackhawk 4-1 Friday night, the Tigers returned to defeat Class 2A No. 12 Homestead 2-0 Saturday morning and then hosting Carroll 1-0 in the championship.
Against Blackhawk, Zack Tucker and Diego Lopez each scored two goals, while T.J. Hofer and Gustavo Rodriguez netted goals in the semifinal win over Homestead.
In the final, Lopez scored the decisive goal in with just 23.7 seconds remaining in overtime, while Michael Yantz posted seven saves in the victory.
The 8-0-1 Tigers host Elkhart Memorial tonight in Northern Lakes Conference play.

Saturday in North Manchester
The Manchester boys soccer team won its own four-team tournament Saturday, defeating North Miami 3-1 in the opener then Rochester 4-3 in the championship. Manchester’s Tom Naragon was named the tournament MVP, scoring five goals, three of which came in the title tilt. Whitko also competed in the tournament, falling to Rochester (3-0) and North Miami (1-0). The Squires face Rochester again today in Three Rivers Conference action then host Eastbrook Thursday. Whitko’s next game is Wednesday at Hamilton.

The Wawasee boys soccer team went 1-1 at Saturday’s Bremen Invitational, defeating Trinity 7-1 and lost to Bremen 2-0. The 1-5 Warriors are back in action today at Huntington North, then host NorthWood Thursday.

Saturday in Marion
The sixth-ranked Warsaw boys cross country team finished second in the big school division of the Marion Invitational, while Wawasee won the small school division. In the big school division, second-ranked Carroll won with 35 points, while Warsaw tallied 50. Warsaw had three runners finish in the top six, including Jacob Poyner (2nd, 15:41), Ellis Coon (3rd, 15:58) and Robert Murphy (6th, 16:06). In their victory in the small school division, Wawasee had the top two runners, as Adam Doll won in 16:55 and Reid Stichter was second in 17:07. The Tigers travel to Elkhart today for a three-team Northern Lakes Conference meet against Elkhart Memorial and Concord, then host Plymouth and Goshen on Sept. 11. Wawasee is also in a three-team NLC meet tonight, hosting Northridge and Goshen, then head to Dunlap to take on Concord and NorthWood on Sept. 11.

Carroll won the 17-team invitational with 87 points, while Rochester had 89 and the hosting Squires were 14th with 376. Northfield’s Caleb Augustus won the event in 16:35, while Manchester’s Matthew Fahs-Brown was third with a time of 17:00. Manchester will be at this Saturday’s Tippecanoe Valley Invitational.

The Triton boys cross country team finished fourth at Saturday’s Caston Invitational, while Tippecanoe Valley was 13th. South Bend Adams was the top team with 71 points, while Triton had 126 and Valley finished with 322. Lakeland’s Joseph Troust was the first overall runner with a time of 16:36, while Triton was led by Trenton Stackhouse’s ninth-place finish (17:38) and Valley was paced by Brandon Maull’s 36th (19:03). Saturday in Plymouth
The Wawasee girls golf team finished Saturday’s Culver Girls Academy Invitational in second place at the Indiana National Golf Club at Swan Lake in Plymouth. Twin Lakes won the tournament with a 382, while Wawasee shot a 385. Fairfield’s Mary Shipley was the medalist, shooting a 79 on the par-72 course. Wawasee was led by Elizabeth Jackson’s 88 and Tippecanoe Valley got a 105 from Allyson Ross. Wawasee is at Fairfield today before hosting Whitko and West Noble at Maxwelton Golf Club. Tippy Valley hosts Winamac and Pioneer Wednesday at Mill Creek Golf Club.

The hosting Manchester girls soccer team lost in penalty kicks in the championship game of the Manchester Invitational Saturday. After defeating North Miami 3-1 in the opening game, Manchester and Rochester played to a 2-2 tie in the title game, with the Lady Zebras winning in the shootout. Whitko also took part in the tournament, falling to Rochester 1-0 in their opener, once again in penalty kicks, then defeating North Miami 5-3 in the consolation game. Both teams return to action Wednesday, as Whitko hosts Wawasee and Manchester welcomes in Huntington North.

The Bethany Christian boys tennis team handed Triton a 4-1 loss Saturday morning. Playing on their home courts, Bethany swept all three singles courts, and also won at No. 2 doubles. Triton’s win came from Jeff Ross and Pete Kauffman at No. 1 doubles, where they won 6-1, 6-2. The Trojans travel to Tippecanoe Valley today then  host South Bend Riley Wednesday.

The Warsaw volleyball team nabbed its own tournament championship, defeating Tippecanoe Valley in the opening match, then Madison-Grant in the championship. On the day, Jamie Lacheta had 28 kills and seven aces, while Katie Voelz posted six blocks, Chloe Hubner had 63 assists and Alex Sanchez finished with 39 digs. After losing to Warsaw, Valley went on to lose to South Bend Clay in the consolation. Warsaw hosts Northridge tonight then welcomes in Columbia City on Sept. 11. Valley travels to North Miami today before going to Triton Thursday.
