For the past 11 months, there has been talk around the state about curtailing the power of the governor. The state had one champion who was humbly leading the fight to curtail the overreach of the executive branch and that was Curt Nisly.
Recently, a bill was discussed that would have limited the powers of the governor. HB 1123 was brought forth to limit the powers of the governor, but all it does give the General Assembly the ability to convene if the governor declares a state of emergency and the General Assembly finds it necessary to address the emergency with legislative action.
The underlying bill is a great idea in theory, but this bill does not have any teeth. Curt Nisly helped offer amendments that would have actually curtailed the powers of the governor and would have helped Hoosiers deal with the pandemic and the Indy establishment voted down every single one of them. Curt Nisly wanted to give the bill teeth. Instead, the Indy establishment gave the governor a medal.
When Curt Nisly first called out the governor for his executive orders, it was apparent that he was looking out for Hoosiers in this district. Curt Nisly knows that every Hoosier is essential and he stood up to the governor. We should be glad that he is representing us in Indianapolis.
