ROCHESTER - Nettie Crabbs, 102, of 1137 W. Birmingham Road, Macy, and formerly of Rochester, died at 11:32 a.m. July 11, 2010, in her daughter's residence near Macy.
She was born Jan. 10, 1908, in Charleston, S.C., to John Robert and Elizabeth Marjenhoff Ray. On July 25, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, she married Lester Ferris Crabbs, who died Jan. 19, 1986.
She graduated from Hepzibah (Ga.) High School; State Normal College, Athens, Ga.; the University Hospital School of Nursing, Augusta, Ga.; St. Luke's School of Nursing, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Woodcox Commercial School, Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker and was also involved in the nursing profession and childcare. She was the oldest member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Neighborly Club; Rebekah Lodge; Past Grand Noble Club; and RSVP. Rochester was her home for 74 years, prior to moving near Macy, where she lived with her daughter for the past six years.
Surviving are two daughters, Chaume (and spouse Wayne) Smoker, Louisiana, Mo., and Charone Savage, Macy; twin sons, Lawrence J. Crabbs, Godfrey, Ill., and Dr. Jerry Ray Crabbs, Burlington, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eight sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Revs. Maurice Grindle and George Hapner officiating. Burial will be in Rochester's IOOF Cemetery.
