MILFORD — Nelson Eugene Kistler, 81, Syracuse, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse.
Nelson was born June 28, 1937, in Syracuse, to Russell and Mary Droke Kistler. He married Mary Jean Smoker on May 1, 1999; she preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2013.
After graduating from high school, Nelson served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Spinax submarine. Nelson was proud to have served his country and was a member of Syracuse American Legion Post 223.
Nelson was a production manager in the mobile home manufacturing industry prior to his retirement. He enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Fort Myers, Fla., golfing, watching I.U. basketball, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by four children: Danae Whetten, Fort Myers; Denise (husband Dan) Brennan, Syracuse; Chad (wife Shelia) Berkeypile, Milford; and Brent (wife Erin) Berkeypile, Syracuse. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Kistler, Auburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jean; two brothers, Claude and Stanley; and two sisters, Katherine and Martha.
Friends and family will gather for a celebration of Nelson’s life at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, 20430 C.R. 46, New Paris; Pastor Dwayne Runkle will officiate the service. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and American Legion Post 223.
There will be a time of sharing one hour prior to the service, from 5 to 6 p.m.
Mishler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Milford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
