Mentone Residents To See Increase In Water Bills

Posted

MENTONE – Residents in Mentone are going to see their water bills bump up a couple of dollars at the beginning of 2018.

The Mentone Town Council finalized a storm water ordinance on Monday, which will increase storm water fees by $2 for residents and $5 for businesses. The fees are designed to help the town accumulate funding for future maintenance on an aging storm water system.

“Some areas need repaired now, but we don’t have the money to fix everything,” said councilman Tim Croy. “We also don’t know when things will fail, so we need to start saving for the future.”

Residents and businesses will notice the fee increases in their February bills.

In other news, Mentone Superintendent Josh Shepherd said that the state is refusing to help cover the cost of a sinkhole that developed at 301 E. Main St., otherwise known as Ind. 25.

Shepherd told the council that he had contacted numerous state officials and has made no headway in getting someone to come fix the sinkhole. He said that Mentone crews dug out the sinkhole to see what was causing the issue, but that no obvious problems presented themselves.

Shepherd said crews filled the hole with dirt and are waiting a few weeks to repave it to see if the sinkhole develops again.

Mentone also has set their trick-or-treat time. It will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, with the Mentone Chamber of Commerce holding a costume judging contest at 7 p.m. at Mentone Elementary School, 301 E. Jackson St.
