NAPPANEE – Melvin L. “Mel” Myers, 71, of 1308 Northwood Drive, Nappanee, died at 10:35 a.m. June 30, 2012, in his residence, after a short illness.

He was born July 25, 1940, in Kanawha County, Campbells Creek, W.Va., to Babe and Zelma Hammock Myers. On July 17, 1987, he married Judy Whelan Menzie, who survives.

He moved to Nappanee from West Virginia in 1963. He was a professional truck driver, driving for Knepp Sand and Gravel, Morehouse Farms and Digger’s Poly Vinyl Fencing. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited; was active with the Butch Nine Memorial Golf Scholarship committee; founder and member of Elkhart County Coon Hunter’s Association; and a member and former vice president of Northeastern Trout Association.

Also surviving are four sons: Mike (and spouse Jody) Myers, Wolcottville; Randy (and spouse Nora) Menzie and Rick (and spouse Karon) Menzie, all of Nappanee; and Rob (and spouse Chris) Menzie, Warsaw; four daughters: Kathy (and spouse Roger) Brown and Karla (and spouse Bob) Stouder, all of Nappanee; Laurie (and spouse Steve) Hoffer, Wakarusa; and Rita (and spouse Larry) Seitz, Bremen; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles William “Bill” Myers, Syracuse, and Ralph Earnest “Shorty” (and spouse Muffit) Myers, Campbells Creek. He was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with the Rev. Janet McFall-Brown officiating. Cremation will take place after services.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
