Last evening, Aug. 17, on my birthday, my wife and I had the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and sing at the “Campfire and Sunday School Chorus Hymnsing” at Grace Retirement Village. Bill Schaffer, Richard Dick, Terry White, Sharon White and Howard Mayes led us down a trail of choruses as the audience sang out, many of us not even needing the words on the screen.
It struck me as I headed home how deeply those choruses were embedded in my memory! Some I had not heard let alone sung for many years. Thank you for a great evening and we look forward to the carol singing on Dec. 7.
Walter Savage once noted, "Music is God's gift to man, the only art of Heaven given to earth, the only art of earth we take to Heaven.”
Melodies and words over the ages have pointed to the Heavenly Father who is the creator of the universe and melody! Those choruses that we sang had four themes over and over: Jesus, His blood that forgives sins, being obedient to His Word and the promise of Heaven.
Some of my earliest memories are my mother singing to me or praising God with folks in church who are now in glory. One day when I am called home we will gather once again and sing praises.
Psalm 95:1-2 says, “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.” If you are a follower of Jesus keep singing, you’re practicing for heaven! If you don’t know Christ, repent and seek His forgiveness and let Him put a new song in your heart!
