May Never Recycle Again

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

For almost 50 years I've meticulously salvaged almost every piece of paper, every aluminum can, etc., etc., ... and taken it to be recycled.

I've had lots of experiences before, but today topped it off.

My car trunk was filled with my stuff. I drove a few blocks to the Pierceton recycling area and maneuvered the car to get as close as possible to the receptacles.

I noticed all were filled and overflowing with probably over 25 percent cardboard pieces that were not flattened as the instructions indicate should be observed.

There was some wet snow and I noted material on the ground which might have been kitty litter, so I found a container to throw that stuff around so I wouldn't slip and fall.

Then I arranged and rearranged the bins, propped the lids, etc., to make it so I could empty my many bags.

During my labors a fellow in a pickup began to unload his containers that were large plastic bags.  I told him it shouldn't be done, but he continued to somehow find room for a couple more of those.

Also stated: "no grocery bags." I'd think that should apply to large plastic bags as well.

I was continuing my labors of emptying when I looked down at my tennis shoes  now coated with the moisterized "kitty litter"!  How to manage that without my car being trashed?

Somehow I did, utilizing waste paper and one of my recycled ice cream pails to hold one shoe.  Drove home with one stocking foot to my garage.  Carefully got the other foot out of that shoe and stocking-footed into the house! The mess awaits me in and outside of the car – tomorrow.

P. S. I'll laugh about this – another day.
