SYRACUSE - Maxine Jean Pifer, 81, of North Webster, died at 6:20 p.m. Feb. 7, 2010, in Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

She was born April 6, 1928, in Warsaw, to William L. and Marian L. Roose Kinsey. She married Maurice Harris, who preceded her in death. On June 14, 1958, in Michigan City, she married Robert W. "Bob" Pifer, who survives.

She lived most of her life in the Kosciusko County area and graduated in 1946 from Warsaw High School. She formerly worked at Kinsey Coach Line, Winona Lake; Sun Metal and North American Marine, both in Warsaw; and Bob Chevrolet, Wakarusa. She was also former co-owner and operator of Jot-em-Down Grocery Store, Barbee Lake, in the late 1960s. She attended the All Saints Episcopal Church, Syracuse, and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 253, North Webster. She was a former precinct committeewoman and election board member for Van Buren and Wayne Townships for many years. She was a former member of North Winona Church of the Brethren and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Warsaw.

Also surviving are four daughters: Teresa Hainge, Albuquerque, N.M.; Melanie Belltane, Freemont, Calif.; Beth (and spouse Rick) Monroe, North Webster; and Marcia (and spouse Samuel) Baumgartner, Milford; a son, John (and spouse Gretchen) Pifer, Tampa Bay, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Kathryn Fisher, Rochester; Patricia (and spouse John ) Savage, Cleveland, Ohio; and Cynthia (and spouse Timothy) Hamilton, Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and four brothers: Paul (and spouse Ruby) Kinsey, Augusta, Maine; Richard (and spouse Donna) Kinsey, of Traverse, Fla.; Larry (and spouse Linda) Kinsey, North Webster; and Beryle (and John) Kinsey, Elkhart.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, with Father Larry Biller officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
