Max L. Weller, 76, of 5621 Ind. 14, Silver Lake, died at 6:35 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born April 11, 1933, in Wabash County, to Chester A. and Beatrice Fetrow Weller. On July 4, 1953, in Silver Lake, he married Marlene J. Leckrone, who survives.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he served as precinct committeeman for Seward II since 1976, and served on the Seward Township advisory board for 11 years. Other civic activities include: serving as assistant supervisor for the Kosciusko County Soil and Water District for eight years, former FHMA Loan Committee chairman, former vice president of Silver Lake Area Townships Chamber of Commerce; former Kosciusko Community Hospital Corporation board member; Kosciusko County delegate to the Republican State Convention three times; Kosciusko County Republican Party Hall of Fame inductee and was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1984, by then Indiana Gov. Robert Orr. He attended West Eel River Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake. He graduated from the Dale Carnegie Course and served as a class instructor. He faithfully served his nation in the U.S. Army from 1953-55, during the Korean War and attained the rank of corporal.
His occupational achievements include operating the family farm; serving as branch manager for Supersweet Feeds, Silver Lake, from 1984-2001, and was awarded Branch Manager of the Year in 1985; served as Silver Lake town marshall for 10 years; and was a longtime reserve deputy for the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Reserve.
Also surviving are two daughters, Marsha (and spouse Kevin) McSherry, Burket, and Maxine Haines, Claypool; two sons, Michael (and spouse Jean) Weller and Mark (and spouse Laura) Weller, all of Silver Lake; nine grandchildren: Jason (and spouse Allison) McSherry, Burket; Sarah (and spouse Josh) Spangle and Ty (and spouse Roz) Marshall, all of Warsaw; Ashley (and spouse David) Spangle, Leesburg; Hunter and Madison Haines, both of Claypool; Tracy (and spouse Amy) Marshall, Nashville, Tenn.; Angela Weller, Silver Lake; and Linda (and spouse Ryan) Moore, Marion; and two great-grandchildren, Madelynn Claire McSherry, Burket, and Kelsey Marshall, Nashville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Weller.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, with Pastor Brian Korey officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.
