Losing Choices

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

What happened to our freedom of choice? We are still supposed to have the right to choose, correct?

Obama has signed a bill that gives the government the choice of how a cigarette tastes by controlling the flavor, and how much tar and nicotine goes into each cigarette, to try to make people quit smoking. Yet, Obama struggles with smoking himself, so what gives him the right to take that choice away from Americans? Am I imagining things or are our freedoms becoming less and less?

You know, for this being the land of the free, it sure does feel like a lot of our choices are getting made for us. Soon tobacco is going to be like marijuana, illegal, and more people will be in jail for growing their own tobacco because they didn't have the choice to smoke. Then more of our tax dollars will be wasted on providing jails for something stupid.

What's next? Is the government going to sign a bill stating how much gas we can put in our vehicles a week so we'll have less pollution? The way it's looking that's how it's going to be. You know, I'm trying to look at this from all angles, but it's kind of hard. I'm trying to teach my son that to get anywhere in life, he has to make his own choices. With the way things are going, by the time he's old enough, there will be no choices for him to make. The government should be worrying about more important things like keep the criminals in jail longer, paying off the national debt, and bringing our jobs back to America.

The experts keep saying that smoking, and the sun causes cancer, etc. Well if we stopped doing everything they say causes cancer, none of us would be doing anything. What is this country coming to when you're made to feel like a hardened criminal because you chose to smoke, but it's suddenly OK to kill unborn babies?

I say we get America the way it used to be. A country we are proud and free to live the way we want, and freedoms to do as we please. This used to be a country with its own individuality unlike all the other countries of the world. That's why so many people have come to America, because it's suppose to be "The Land of the Free."

Well in the words of my generation: Yeah, right.
