Editor, Times-Union: This letter is in response to Laura Parker’s letter concerning litter in our community on March 28. I first want to thank you, Laura, for your acknowledgement of the problem we have with trash around our community. I agree that it’s disgusting and sad what we, as a whole, have been doing to our environment.
I never noticed the trash on the side of the road until my husband, Jon Fussle, pointed it out as the snow melted this winter. He would get so frustrated as we passed bags of fast food, cigarette butts/boxes, plastic bottles or plastic bags along the roads. Then he realized that as a candidate running for county council in the May 8th primary elections, he has a chance to be an advocate for our litter-filled community.
Of course, cleaning up the community you live in is a great idea, but to be honest, I wasn’t sure how cleaning up trash would help him win a campaign. Then he explained to me that being on county council doesn’t mean you just go to a meeting once a month and continue with your daily life. Being on county council means that you are a leader of the community – an advocate if you will – and you can’t expect anyone else to do something that you, as a leader, wouldn’t do yourself.
It is this reason that Jon and I, along with our friends, family and supporters, will be hosting a “County-Wide Clean-Up” effort on Earth Day! Leadership in this community shouldn’t begin when the election ends, it starts now! We encourage you and your neighbors to join us on April 22, 2012, Earth Day, in our “County-Wide Clean-Up” as we use our campaign for county council try to make a difference in this community!
Why would a candidate for office use his campaign to pick up trash? Because May 8th, win or lose, Jon Fussle and those who support him, will have made a difference in Kosciusko County!
We have set up different stations online at www.JonFussle.com, under “Campaign Calendar,” where you can join our clean-up efforts.
