Government Hypocrisy

Editor, Times-Union:
Here we go again! Government agencies telling us all how illegal it is to shoot off fireworks, then turn right around and allow cities and towns to shoot off fireworks, is this leading by example? Not. It's the same thing with gambling, tell everyone they can't have video poker machines and other kinds of gambling, but then turn around and allow the lotteries to operate in the state. Same o same o. Have a nice day.

Tribute To Frances Hull

Editor, Times-Union:
Below is a copy of a letter sent to Frances Hull (recently deceased). She was the organizer and leader of this Campfire Group Chartered in 1933.

The local members still get together as well as keeping touch with all the members living elsewhere.

We hope you will publish this as the Memorial Service for both her and her husband, Max, will be quite soon here at First United Methodist Church.

How wonderful it would be if every youngster had a "Fran" in their life.

Dear Fran,
Much has transpired for all of us since those wonderful fun-filled and character building years when you were the adored leader of our beloved Campfire Group. How fortunate we were to have had you for a role model during our teens. You weren't more than five or six years older than we were at the time, but we were in awe and anxious to please. We were so aware of your slight build, your red hair, your intense blue eyes and your ready smile, and you had said yes to our plea.

I often wonder how you could have been so patient with twenty-one restless young ladies who weren't above engaging in silly horseplay.

You listened to all our hopes and dreams, and you kept us focused on the right paths. The Campfire Group was our sanctuary.

You suffered through all those rehearsals for the plays we put on and attended all our ice-cream socials that enabled us to make enough money for a week at camp each summer. By unselfishly giving up a week of your own vacation time you helped us all to bond as lifelong friends. We were always so happy when later you were able to stop off in Warsaw for some of the reunions. You were there for us over the years when six of the orginal group passed away.

You were the person most influential in our lives during that period, and we want to be sure you know it. Somehow, just saying thank you doesn't seem enough ,but Thank You, Thank You.

Our Love,
Your O-WE-KON-ZA
Campfire Group

Phone Costs

Editor, Times-Union:
More and more one reads that the state and federal governments wish to "help the public lower phone costs" by increasing the base rates and lower or increase competition for long distance rates.

Base rates are the required part of the rate structure that all must pay as a necessity in today's life. Long distance calls are not a necessity, but a choice to use or not use. That is a luxury.

It is time to recognize that the public good can be best served by maintaining a low base rate and putting a larger share of the cost on long distance usage, as was the structure prior to the interference by governments and the pressure from special interests to gain lower long distance costs.

Our legislators are saying a $5 increase in the base rate will increase competition and lower phone costs? This math escapes my logic somehow.

Further, the base rates between phone companies defies reasonable regional costs as I pay a low of $11.27 including tone service (which is nearly mandatory with business calls) to over $26 for local Indiana service base rate. Are the utility commissions really acting in the best interests of the public?
