Probable Cause

Editor, Times-Union:
What happened to our Indiana law stating that "you are innocent until proven guilty." Not so in Superior Court of Kosciusko County. It is "you are guilty until proven innocent." I am not wrong. Ask the traffic offenders that have their license taken away at their probable cause hearings. Who is the judge to say that he sees by the evidence that there is probable cause to revoke the license at this time? 1. He has not heard any evidence at this hearing. 2. I didn't know we were guilty before the evidence was heard. 3. I thought we only had one God to judge us. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that drinking and driving is fine, it is not. But what I am saying you, the judicial system, is judging our people before they can present their cases. Which is completely and totally uncalled for. I was going home from work one weekend night and for the hour it was and the traffic Syracuse had moving, why did we need two city police, two sheriff and one state police patrolling the town and county roads? I thought at first I was in Chicago. You had more law enforcement on duty then you had traffic on the roads. This was at 2 in the morning. Now you want to know what entrapment is, take that example. Need I say anymore about this subject? Get ahold of reality and fight our break-ins around Syracuse (God knows we have enough of them). Also if you would watch the traffic for drugs you could make more arrests than drunk drivers. Since the subject has been brought up, look at the total drug busts you have had in the Syracuse area. Sure don't compare to the drunks and God knows we have a lot of drug dealing going on all around this town (Syracuse) and Kosciusko County. If your political concerns concentrate on drunk drivers alone, then this county is in trouble. It will be interesting to see what the flow of arrests in the county will be after election. OK, boys, go to it!

Judge lest you be judged!

Times Change

Editor, Times-Union:
My, my how times change!
Many years ago a kid phoned the school with a bomb threat. He was sent to prison for quite a few years.

Last week, on two different days, a kid phoned in a bomb threat. He was placed under house arrest!

Sarah Brady

Editor, Times-Union:
You have to admit it, she's slick. I'm referring, of course, to Ms. Sarah Brady. She was in South Bend on the 22nd talking about "sensible" gun policies. To hear her today you'd swear she is a firearms enthusiast simply trying to get a handle on unrestricted guns. Well, if you buy that, I've got a very nice bridge built by Washington Roebling I'll make you a real deal on.

The problem with people like Ms. Brady is that they believe people forget what they have said in the past. For those who don't keep close tabs on such things, she's probably correct but there are those of us out there who cannot and will not forget. Ms. Brady chairs Handgun Control Inc., which is the most powerful of the anti-gun lobbying groups. Now let me give you a quote from HCI.

"Our ultimate goal - total control of handguns in the United States - is going to take time. My estimate is from seven to 10 years. The first problem is to slow down the increasing number of handguns being produced and sold in this country. The second problem is to get handguns registered. And the final problem is to make the possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition - except for the military police, licensed security guards, licensed sporting clubs and licensed gun collectors - totally illegal." Pete Shields, founder HCI, to the New Yorker, July 26, 1976.

Now I know that was before Ms. Brady's time but the goals of HCI have never changed and she now chairs that organization. In 1993 and 1994 the anti-gunners were sure they had the Second Amendment on its knees but then came the elections of November 1994 and the whole thing came to a screeching halt. Now Ms. Brady knows that it will be, at best, a very long and painful endeavor and she will be forced to measure progress by the inch rather than the yard.

Those of us on the other side, however, learned in 1968 that we could no longer bend. There will be no more compromises. Every step to the destruction of the Bill of Rights will be fought tooth and nail!

Good Samaritans

Editor, Times-Union:
On the morning of April 27, 1998, our 2-year-old miniature Schnauzer named "Bandit" darted out of our front door, bright green leash in tow. He ran out of sight and ignored our calls. We searched the neighborhood on foot and by car without success. Returning home, we were ready to call the police, in case someone turned him in, however, the phone rang before we could place the call. It was our vet's office at Lake City Animal Clinic. They asked if we were looking for Bandit.

Tim Newton had stopped nearby on business and spotted Bandit on the street, realizing someone had lost a pet. He called our vet from the phone number on the tag attached to Bandit's collar. He waited for us to pick up Bandit, no doubt losing valuable time from his work. Tim Newton is typical of the many kind people who live in this area ... willing to go out of their way to help someone else, even at the loss of business time.

This incident is a further testimony that tags on your pet are very effective. A huge thank you to Tim Newton for capturing Bandit and Lake City Animal Clinic for their prompt follow-up.
