Editor, Times-Union: The KC Recycling Depot (Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District) is, as you know, the recycling unit for Kosciusko County. We provide the recycling service for the seven recycling stations located around the county. We also provide household chemical collection, a reuse room where we provide free paints, stains and sealers to the public. We accept all items containing mercury, including fluorescent lights and thermometers, and many types of electronics, including computers, monitors and TVs of all kinds and sizes.
It is this last group that I am addressing. We must charge for the recycling of monitors and TVs as they are the most expensive for us to recycle. The cost is $10 for monitors and regular TVs and $15 console TVs (there is an average of four points of lead and other toxic chemicals in the screens). This fee goes directly toward the cost of recycling these products. For the last two Mondays I have arrived at work to find monitors (last week) and a console RCA TV (along with trash that we will have to pay to have sent to the landfill!). When left as these were, it is considered open dumping, which is illegal in the state of Indiana and Kosciusko County. It also makes our work twice as hard as we have to move these items across the building - we are but a two-woman office - and reduces the amount of money we have to pay for the disposal of these items! I appreciate that the residents leaving these items want them recycled, but just as there is a cost for landfilling items, there is a cost associated with recycling them! Please do not leave items unattended! Our offices hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month March through December. If you call 574-327-3087 we will be glad to stay late or come in early - our regular collection days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays.

Politicians
Editor, Times-Union: We have some members of Congress taking a lot of time away from the job we hired them to do. They are trying to get selected to run for president. I have heard a lot of words from them finding fault with things. There is nothing wrong with being in disagreement with things. What I want is for them to propose their ideas on what the solution is, so that I can make an educated decision as to which is better. I have not heard one specific proposal. Anyhow, if these members of Congress have the real solutions, why should we have to wait for when they may become president? They need to get on the ball and make their proposals now. My guess is, they don't know the answers either. Politicians are good at saying a lot, but not really saying anything.

Gun Control
Editor, Times-Union: The gun control fanatics want to ban firearms from the general public in order to save lives. They are silent about the abortion industry that kills hundreds of thousands of babies every year. More guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens mean less crime, not more. Among the last words of Jesus Christ to his disciples were these, "Who has no sword let him sell his garment and buy one." Luke 22:36.

Senior Services Says Thanks To Volunteers
Editor, Times-Union: Kosciusko Community Senior Services would like to express their appreciation and thanks to the volunteers who deliver more than 100 mobile meals each day. They are very generous with their time and effort in helping to serve seniors living in Kosciusko County.
We still have a need for more volunteer drivers. We now have 15 seniors living in the Winona Lake area that are unable to receive their noon meals because we don't have volunteer drivers to deliver them. We are asking for the Winona Lake community to get involved in this very important activity. We hope that churches and clubs would bring up the idea to their members and give a hand for their community.
In addition, KCSS would appreciate anyone living in the Kosciusko Community to become an important part of our Mobile Meal program by offering your time as a regular (once a month or more) volunteer driver. The delivery of these routes usually takes only an hour or slightly more in some cases.
KCSS would appreciate anyone interested in becoming a Mobile Meal driver or scheduler to call our office at 267-2012 and ask for Anita from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once you do it, you will love it. Great rewards!
