Editor, Times-Union: In March 1996, my son bought me a G.E. Microwave ($134) at Wal-Mart for my birthday. My Amana (1979) was still working perfectly. In May 1998, two years and one month later, the G.E. failed. G.E. has no service available except to call them and they will come to you. The trip charge is $29.95 plus a minimum $10 charge for estimate. I called G.E. and asked about service rates. The lady gave me no prices but assured me they were reasonable.
I think people should be warned. The fee is $39.95 minimum for tip and estimate. After warranty (two years), the simplest and least expensive repair is for a fuse - $10 plus $69.95 labor charge to install. Think of it, a minimum of $110 for the smallest problem.
In our case the magnetron tube was bad; it was still under warranty and it was free. The labor to install it was $99.95.
My minimum charge for a free magnetron tube was $29.95 (trip), $10 (estimate), and $99.95 (labor to install). Rather than spend approximately $140 to repair a used G.E. microwave, I paid my $39.95 for nothing and now have to dispose of it. Truly a disposable society!
I called G.E. to complain and received assurance they were registering my complaint, which obviously meant nothing.

Friend In Need
Editor, Times-Union: I would like to write about a friend in need. Monday night Silver Lake Fire Department was called to a house fire of a fellow volunteer fireman. The Brian Sherrill family. Brian and Michelle volunteer for the So Cen Kos Ems and Brian is a member of the Silver Lake Fire Department. These people have helped their community for years getting called out all hours of the day and night to help people of Silver Lake and surrounding area. I feel it is about time the people of Silver Lake return the favor. These people need bedroom furniture for the kids. All the items upstairs are lost. Also clothes for the kids.Ê
ÊLuckily only one child was hurt seriously and he is improving but will need some extra care. I know the family would appreciate anything that Silver Lake could do to help them.Ê
ÊSilver Lake residents, this family has been there to help you, now you need to be there to help them. Show the people of Indiana what a great town we are and do whatever you can to help.
