Shelter Needs Help

Editor, Times-Union:
In response to "Upset with Animal Welfare League," my heart goes out to you and your family over the loss of your beloved Lucy. We lost our two golden retrievers last year - Comet and Angel were with us for many years but cancer took over. We were heartbroken and lost. My daughter's best friend decided to adopt a sweet 3-month-old shepherd mix puppy from the AWL as a gift for our family for Christmas.

We all fell in love with Darla (my daughter chose her name). Within three days she fell ill and my vet diagnosed her with parvo. Since she had her first shots she had a 75 percent chance of survival. Almost $400 and many prayers later our baby survived this terrible disease.

The AWL knew that parvo was a problem but failed to quarantine the dogs and puppies until further tests and proper care was given. So anyone adopting a puppy will probably be devastated because parvo is highly contagious and deadly.

As you see, not all stories have a happy ending. Before Darla got sick or showed signs, our daughter's friend had her basset hound puppy around her. She too fell ill but pulled through since she had her shots and a great vet.

My dream if I had the money would be to have a much bigger and sanitary shelter that provided testing and vet care to all the animals. New arrivals should be quarantined until proper care was done. But I don't have the kind of money it takes and all our donations are obviously not enough. Someone with money should consider helping our animal friends with a better building and staff.

Everyone should visit our shelter - it is so sad. It's time we all take a stand and fix this longtime problem. I would definitely help in any way I can. So sorry for Lucy and all the other not-so-lucky dogs. We need to put a stop to this somehow.

Hunters

Editor, Times-Union:
Whoa Baby! Now here's a dandy for you! A letter to the editor that appeared in Field and Stream, in response to an article on the necessity of controlling the herds of feral horses and donkeys on public land:

"You all should be shot and dumped into a pit to burn alive! However, with your rotten-smelling attitudes, I doubt that even a grizzly would want you for lunch. Get a clue, jerks! The equine world is much bigger than your beer-bellied, pistol-packing, let's-see-what-we-can-kill-today crowd."

Man, I wish I could write like that! I just can't think that fast.

Anyone out there with any questions about how the non-hunting population feels about us low-life hunters?
