LCA Falls To Argos In Defense-Driven Sectional Opener

Posted

Last season, the Lakeland Christian boys soccer team won its first ever sectional championship after defeating Argos in the title game. Flash forward to Monday night, and the two sides met again. This time, it was in the opening round of the tournament, and this time, the Dragons got their revenge. Another successful season for the Cougars was cut short as Argos won the defensive battle 1-0.

The match began with the Dragons applying a ton of pressure to LCA. The host school was able to control the ball on the Lakeland Christian end of the field for a majority of the first five minutes of the game. It ended up paying dividends 4:48 into the game, as a perfect pass freed up Ioan Petz right in front of the net. He’d do the rest, scoring the opener to put Argos in front.

The Dragons followed up the first goal of the game by very nearly picking up a couple more during the next stretch of play. The hosts continued to apply pressure to the Cougars, forcing the representatives from Winona Lake to remain sharp on the defensive end before even thinking of putting together some offense.

By the time the midway point of the first half had been reached, the status quo had not yet changed. The Dragons had just come incredibly close to doubling their lead, but a header in front of a wide open net sailed just over the crossbar. LCA had still not found a way to possess the ball for a meaningful amount of time themselves outside of a few runs by the forwards that didn’t amount to much.

Throughout the final 15 minutes of the half, the Lakeland Christian defense began keeping their opponent at bay more often and was able to win quite a few possessions because of it. While the Cougars were now starting to keep the ball for longer and began slowly creeping toward the offensive zone, the team lacked the final touches needed to create some serious scoring chances of their own.

Even though LCA had done almost nothing offensively through the first 40 minutes, the defense was beginning to play much better, and the deficit was still just one as the halftime whistle sounded.

Needing a second-half equalizer to keep its season alive, Lakeland Christian came out of the break with some fire. It seemed as if the team matched its first half offensive output just 10 minutes into the second. Their best chance yet came five minutes into the half, as a corner kick very neartly found its way into the back of the net.

A second corner five minutes later yielded similar results: a few good looks at the net following the cross, but none that were able to find the target. Even as the team continued to search for a way to tie the game, it was clear that the dynamic had shifted.

Still, time remained the enemy of the Cougars. Soon, 20 minutes had passed and only 20 remained. Argos responded well to that surge by LCA and had begun getting back to applying some pressure of their own to their opponent.

This continued until just 10 minutes remained with the game still holding the same score. The Dragons very nearly put the finishing touches on the victory with a second goal, but the hosts were unable to capitalize on a terrific cross in the box.

With six minutes left, Jashawn Zielasko very nearly created the game-tying chance himself, winning a 50-50 ball and taking uit upfield before passing it off in the box. However, Zaiden Miller, the player who received the ball, was unable to find the seperation needed to unleash a shot on goal, and yet another chance went by the wayside.

The Cougars would put one more shot on goal in the final minutes of the match, but a save would seal their fate. LCA was unable to do anything else offensively as time ran out, as Argos was able to hold onto possession and milk those final minutes away.

Lakeland Christian (9-7) will return next season.
