Lakeland Christian Students Support Local Right To Life

Posted
There is more than one way to give. There is more than one way to show support for a great cause.
Art students of Lakeland Christian Academy gave of their time and talents to support Kosciusko Right to Life. Students crafted 280 faceted bud vase centerpieces  from wood, all painted, sanded and embellished with fall mums for tonight’s Fall Banquet.
Driving home from an event in Indianapolis last fall, a display of wooden children on the front lawn of a local church caught my eye.
Wooden silhouettes were painted pink or blue representing girls and boys aborted in their local county, similar to the powerful  display on the grounds of Grace College here in Winona Lake.
As I turned my head, a prenatal ambulance whizzed by. The unit was specially marked with bold lettering on the side as if to identify, “This unit is carrying a tiny and precious life.” It occurred to me as I watched it speed out of sight that the only difference between the children represented on the lawn and the fragile premature child that ambulance was carrying … was love.
I attended the Right to Life Banquet last year. Some friends sponsored a table and shared tickets with us. My heart was primed by the wooden children and the speeding ambulance. After a beautiful dinner and tremendous speaker many gave money to support Right to Life efforts in our community.
I asked myself, “What more can I do to help this? What more do I have to offer?” I am a teacher and an artist. I have a classroom of talented students and an opportunity to share this message in a unique way with our next generation.
At LCA, we strive to teach character values in memorable ways. Giving of a tithe, or around 10 percent of earned income, to the church or a cause that reflects God’s heart is a common biblical value. Of the 36 weeks school is in session, art classes gave three weeks to the creation of the wooden vases and had a great time doing it together.
With this project, LCA art students would like to challenge our community. Time and talent count, too. In the Bible, Jesus praised the woman who came to the temple with her arm outstretched ready to give her penny (“The Widow’s Mite” Luke 21:1-4). God asks us to give what we have, not what we don’t have – time, talent or treasure.
How many ways can you give? We thought 280 was a pretty good number to start with.
