Lakeland Christian Gets First Soccer Sectional Win

ARGOS – Junior Noel Blum scored four goals, and freshman Parker Stewart scored twice for Lakeland Christian Academy in its first-ever soccer sectional victory, a 9-0 rout of Culver Community in the semifinals of the 1A Argos Sectional Thursday night. The Cougars held the Cavaliers without a shot on goal in the game while scoring six goals of their own in the first half to take the drama out of the match. Parker scored both of his goals in the opening 40 minutes, and Blum had a hat trick before intermission. Sophomore Landon Twombly had the sixth goal for LCA in the first half. LCA sophomore Remington Swanson found the net for the Cougars in the second half, and Garrett McCoomb closed the game with Lakeland's ninth goal. Lakeland Christian (8-6-1) will take on host Argos, a 5-1 winner over Bremen, for the sectional title Saturday at 7 p.m.
Squires Survive, Advance; Whitko Eliminated FORT WAYNE – Manchester boys soccer head coach Dave McKee said his team didn’t play the game it wanted, but Jake Schannep scored in the 78th minute to give the Squires a 1-0 win over Woodlan in the semifinals of the 1A Blackhawk Sectional Wednesday night. Schannep was assisted by Nathan Self on the match-winning goal. The Squires will face host Blackhawk, an 8-1 winner over Whitko, for the sectional title at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Whitko VB Downs Valley SOUTH WHITLEY – The Whitko Lady Wildcats earned a hard-fought 25-20, 24-26, 27-25, 25-21 win over visiting Tippecanoe Valley in Three Rivers Conference volleyball Thursday night. Senior captain Abby Betten led Valley with 17 digs, 16 kills, and five aces. Sophomore Emily Peterson had 21 assists. Whitko statistics were not available at press time. In the junior varsity match, The Lady Vikings took a 25-13, 25-17 win over Whitko. Sarah Myers had 10 assists and three aces for Valley, with Allison Betten adding seven digs. Amy Baca and Hannah Jansma tied for team-high honors with four kills each. Whitko travels to Albion for its next match, taking on Central Noble on Monday. Valley will go to Southwood for a TRC match on Tuesday.
