AKRON - Joanna W. VanScoy, 93, formerly of Akron, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 11:35 p.m. Feb. 8, 2010, in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw. She was in failing health since Jan. 14, 2010.

She was born March 15, 1916, in Kosciusko County (Beaver Dam), to Sidney and Margaret Heighway Leininger. On Feb. 5, 1950, in Urbana, she married Howard G. VanScoy, who died Jan. 16, 2005.

She was a homemaker and was the bookkeeper for Irelan & Baum Elevator and Lumber Yard for 21 years. She graduated from Akron High School in 1934. For many years she was a member of Akron United Methodist Church, where she helped with many areas such as funeral dinners and harvest suppers. She and her husband were active members of the Akron Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Surviving are a nephew, Thomas (and spouse Janet) Tucker, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; a great-niece, Julianne (and spouse Jay) Dunnuck, Midland, Mich.; and a great-nephew, Christopher (and wife Liza) Tucker, Sherrill, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Imo and Ralph Tucker.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, officiated by the Rev. Karen Ottjes of Akron United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.

Calling is from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
