IHSAA Adding A Third Class For Soccer This FallINDIANAPOLIS – The IHSAA Executive Committee announced Friday it has approved the addition of a third class for boys and girls soccer. The measure was approved by a 17-2 vote and will be implemented this fall. The new classifications will be based on enrollment. The IHSAA released new enrollment figures on Monday, and will announced new classifications for all sports in May. In a press release the IHSAA said a survey of principals, athletic directors, boys and girls head coaches rendered 806 responses, and 581 (72.1 percent) were in favor of adding the third class. In the 2016 season 299 boys teams and 266 girls teams entered the state tournaments, and more are expected for the 2017 season. Soccer became an IHSAA-sanctioned sport in 1994 and operated in a single-class system until 2011, when play in two classes began.
