Hospice

Editor, Times-Union:

As we continue our celebration of National Hospice Month, we would like to take the opportunity to remind the community that hospice care helps patients and families focus on living.

I know this surprises some people.

Those of us who have worked in the field have seen firsthand how hospice and palliative care can improve a person's quality of life. Hospice helps to redefine hope, hope no longer in a cure but in the opportunity for the best quality of life. There's a growing body of evidence that shows this change in focus may actually prolong the lives of some individuals.

The hospice team provides expert medical care to keep patients comfortable, emotional and spiritual support for a greater sense of well-being, guidance on what to expect and help to families with the duties of caring for their loved one.

With the help of hospice, patients and families can focus on what is most important-enjoying life together and living life to the fullest!

This message of hope lasts beyond the month of November, it's important all year long.

If you or your loved one is facing a serious or life-limiting illness, now is the time to find out more about hospice and palliative care. There is more that can be done.
