Editor, Times-Union: Friday, July 15, I was surprised to see that Warsaw could become the “hog” farm of Indiana.
Having been born and lived in Warsaw as a youngster, I could not imagine how anyone would want to spoil its environment with a business such as this.
Not far from where I live, west of South Bend, is one of these so-called hog farms, four buildings. It is also close to several communities and close to a casino and Lake Michigan. It is small scale by the standards planned for your area, but the effect is still the same. The stench is there regardless of the fans and trees that are supposed to defray the smell. You can smell it a mile away. They promise no smell, pollutive contamination in the surrounding fields or streams, but they take the manure out to the outlying fields and dump it.
Have you heard of the trickle-down effect? Of course you have. The steroids and hormones they feed the pigs goes into the ground, creeks and streams, and eventually the lake. Guess who comes into contact with this runoff when you go swimming?
Be informed and attend the meetings and listen to what the pig farmers tell you. It isn’t going to happen the way they tell you.
