COLUMBIA CITY - Helen Faye Sheppard, 86, of Columbia City, and formerly of South Whitley, died at 6:35 a.m. May 6, 2009, in Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City.

She was born March 31, 1923, in Lynn, to Arnold and Bernice Conner Bales. On Nov. 22, 1945, she married Eugene Gilbert Sheppard, DDS, who died in December 1990.

She graduated from Modoc High School in 1941, and earned a teaching degree from Ball State University in 1945. First living in Indianapolis, she moved to South Whitley, and during her husband's military service they lived in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1952, they moved back to South Whitley, where he opened his dental practice. She recently moved to Columbia City. She was a homemaker and a member of South Whitley United Methodist Church.

Surviving are four children: Cheryl Ann Loughlin, Warsaw; Stanton Eugene (and spouse Vicki) Sheppard, North Manchester; Brent William Sheppard, Dallas, Texas; and Jody Janelle Sheppard, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a longtime companion, Max Glassley, Columbia City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a half brother, George Bales; and a sister, Mabel Teeters.

No public services are planned. A private graveside service will be at South Whitley Cemetery.
