Health Care

Editor, Times-Union:

Those on the rght keep harping on how they're looking to "save" the American people from the horrors and evils of government-run insurance and care.

Single-payer should have been the solution. Government already finances about half of Americans' medical care, so you might say our system is already half-socialized.

Medicare is broke because of high cost; and the prescription drug coverage plan Bush signed prohibited CMS from using its purchasing power to negotiate better rates for prescription drugs to save taxpayers money. Giving government power to negotiate drug prices on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries would save cost. We usually think of the republicans as the party of industry competition. However, over time, Republicans have morphed into the party of monopoly and their brand of monopoly is trouble.

It also includes a benefit blackout between $2,500 and $5,000, sticking $2,500 out-of-pocket expenses for chronically ill patients who now had to pay more for their meds than they would have under a CMS-negotiated price. The older you get; the need for healthcare and cost becomes higher.

The Republicans do not care about health care reform. That much is obvious. It's monied corporations.

Thinking the premiums you pay in every month goes directly into an account expense plan to cover your costs is fantasyland. You have insurance because it's cheaper than paying the full cost. That full cost gets paid by people who don't use theirs as much which goes into a pool for the "so called" greater good.

You don't want to pay for other people's healthcare. The insurance companies will have less and less money if more people cannot pay their premiums and opted out. You'll end up paying more for your premiums. They would love a young healthy pool of payees, the coverage needs to be there when people get sick, or are they angeling for the young healthy pool of payees paying for the sick much like younger workers pay into social security. You don't want government running your healthcare; but you'd rather have insurance companies making decisions about your life based on their bottom line. Farm animals get better medical care than many Americans, because it makes economic sense to do so.

Blogging with several Canadians. I wanted to find out the truth. 86.2 percent love their insurance. No emergency is neglected in Canada. No one goes broke because of medical bills. Able to choose their own physicians and to seek multiple opinions. If you can't wait for a schedule appointment then go to the clinic. No different than here. And no rationing. Doctor handles the insurance claim. No billing and reclaim. No deductibles. Co-pays are extremely low. No lobbying where revenues going directly towards patient care. Drugs made and invented in the United States are cheaper in Canada.

Why can't we adopt thier system. Obviously it's working well. 86 percent voted theirs over our broken system.

Countries manage health care; it's not a mystery. We don't and act like we can't. That's a mystery.
